BALI SPA - MASSAGE -
Massage offers great healing and soothing powers by
improving circulation and muscle tone, In this vast
archipelago, healing practices differ from island to
island, each offering a different massage technique.
On Java, for example, blind women often specialize in
massage.
Although hundreds of freelance tukang pijat (masseuse) play
their trade on the beaches of Kuta, Legian and Sanur, Balis
premier hotel spas employ the most adept and highly trained
massage practitioners, incorporating a combination of Swedish,
Balinese, Shiatsu and Thai techniques.
Balinese masseuse are known world-wide for their long strokes
and circles, the application of steady pressure (but not as
strong as Swedish or Thai), as well as an emphasis on the
hands and feet where much tension tends to accumulate. But
most of all the Balinese are known for the caring way their
personalities are transmitted through their hands.
Massage Oils, Creams and Cosmetics
There are an almost infinite variety of scrubs and body wraps.
Bali's spa industry is intensely competitive, thus spas have to
be creative. A common deep cleanse scrub uses copra, pine and
lavender, followed by a bath in soothing mineral water or
milk to release body toxins. Other common treatments include:
Boreh, a Javanese-derived concoction made from fresh
coconut oil, flowers, aromatic roots, cardamom, temulawak
(wild ginger), benzoin, galangal, cloves, pepper, nutmeg,
and kunyit (turmeric, for coloring), or any combination
there of. When rubbed in vigorously, boreh paste, tingles
and refreshes the skin when you're hot or gives it heat
after you've been out in the rain. Designed to increase
body circulation and restore, the balance of pH in the skin,

leaving your skin smooth and supple. After it is applied,
you're, wrapped in a blanket for 15-20 minutes until the
paste dries, enabling the deep heat to penetrate, In the
villages of Bali, old farmers still use boreh to vanquish
muscles made sore and aching from a hard day's work in the
fields.
Javanese lulur, a yellow paste made from rice powder,
mashed kolor leaves, ginger, turmeric, and galangal rubbed
on the whole body by hand to exfoliate the skin. Lulur has
a remarkable softening effect on the skin and has always
been a part of the beauty care of Javanese royal families
it beats western body lotion hands down. Afterwards, the
skin is refreshed with a natural yogurt moisturizer.
Salt Glow is a relaxing body treatment using a
combination of natural salts, black-hulled rice, water
and oils. The combination of ingredients removes dead
skin cells, restores circulation flow, and leaves your

preceded by a calming back treatment which uses essential
oils to decrease muscle tension and stress.

is composed of turmeric and rempah-rempah (a traditional
spicy mixture), followed by a carrot and ginger lotion.
